Starling Inlet Project Underway

ICHK’s unique citizen science project is officially underway.

The first round of lab and field days has been held, as part of a major data cataloguing programme at the Starling Inlet.

Year 9 students have been using probes and collecting samples from the body of water on the school’s doorstep.

They have been recording their findings in ArcGIS, a database that allows users to create, edit, analyse, and share geospatial data and maps. The work marks the beginning of a long-standing relationship between the school and its immediate environment.

The project was inspired by the work of hermit scientists who keep detailed logs in their locality, which are providing invaluable insights into climate patterns.

By collecting samples twice a year, students will be able to catalogue the health of the estuary and make important contributions to environmental work.

Our Science and Outdoor departments are leading the long term initiative, guiding the students as they develop as citizen scientists.

It has been embedded into the Science curriculum so that all Year 8 and 9 students will participate in the project twice. They will have the ability to transition from learners to mentors as they move through the school, with the data being used by senior students in research, and providing valuable insights into climate patterns.

The project is one of a series of unique science initiatives at school, including a partnership with research scientists at CUHK’s SEAMAR to investigate the viability of marine mammals. Planning is also underway on a new project for Year 12s to map coastal erosion.
