New Additions to Deep Learning

Another incredible round of Deep Learning has been enjoyed by students.

They have enjoyed a series of creative experiences, extending learning beyond the classroom, and giving them the chance to explore and delve into a feature of the curriculum in more detail.

Students travelled across Hong Kong, to Macau and Foshan, meeting different people and gathering a huge amount of knowledge in the process.

A total of 23 units was on offer with something for all interests, whether the Arts, Humanities, Science or Sport. The core principle is that all units offer opportunities to develop a range of transferable skills, such as critical thinking, problem solving, communication, collaboration, the ability to work under pressure and with good humour, which we believe are at the heart of education.

For the first time, a new unit on bees was introduced, with students learning about bee farming, bee keeping and honey production and ending with the creation of a bee friendly garden at school.

A Hong Kong travel adventure involved a treasure hunt competition around Hong Kong. Adventure X students enjoyed thrilling outdoor activities, including stream-hiking, coasteering, hiking and abseiling. A Faces of War group travelled around Hong Kong and Macau, considering the horrors of war and examining it from a variety of perspectives.

A team of volleyballers travelled to Foshan where they enjoyed training and a range of cultural exchange activities. In Creeped out in Wanchai, students undertook an exciting quest each day, learning about the history, geography and culture of Hong Kong. A Food and Culture group enjoyed a series of cooking and food tasting experiences to help them learn about wheat products from dumplings to noodles. A Handcraft group learned how to make beautiful artefacts including soaps and candles.

Large numbers were involved in rehearsals for this year’s school production, Tectonic, both on stage and behind the scenes with prop making. Another group worked with the NGS Soap Cycling, learning how to recycle soap, create soap arts and making community visits in Tai Wo Hau and Sheung Shui.

Some students were engaged in board game design, sailing, 3D printing, bread making, film making, rugby 7s and stamp carving. Others learned about the oceans, law, maths and science, visiting a number of destinations around the city.

This was the final iteration in a total of four Deep Learning experiences this year. Every term they enjoy a period of immersive learning, practical opportunities and real life experiences outside of the confines of the classroom, which we believe challenge many of the established norms of mainstream education.
