Human Technologies in Year 10

Having just begun their IGCSE course, Year 10 students are beginning to consider how they can best prepare and get the most from their experience.

Students have applied the Human Technologies Lotus Model as a lens to help set some personal goals in their continuing journey from Self 1 (who they are now) to Self 2 (who they aspire to be - their future Self).

They began this process by taking time to evaluate their existing use of technologies and by considering how useful these were in enhancing their school experience and achieving their personal goals. Students then selected the technologies that they wanted to continue to master and those that they felt would benefit being introduced into their routines.

Here’s a snapshot of some of the common technologies they reviewed as part of their goal setting for IGCSE:

Somatic technologies often included establishing better sleeping and exercise routines so that they felt energised and ready to learn.

Cognitive technologies included finding better routines for organising and prioritising their workload, such as finding a system that helped to organise their subject content, keeping a ‘to-do’ list to help prioritise their workload and ability to stick to important deadlines, as well as developing better reading habits.

Material technologies included the physical tools that help them get to grips with their day-to-day school life more readily: having the right equipment, using different coloured highlighters to help text mark and organise their notes, and making sure their laptops were fully charged.

Social technologies included building in quality time with friends, attempting a new CXA and making an effort to contribute to class more regularly.

Spiritual Technologies included building in time for hobbies such as volleyball and hiking, meditation practice and journaling.

Next, students will apply the SMART method as a technology to help guide them and stick to their goals.
