Year 7s have been studying some of the earliest 'Key Technologies', chief among them, the domestication of fire at least 40,000 years ago.

The HT Department joined forces with the outdoor team to bring the theory to life. Students experimented with the earliest fire-starting technologies, trying to spark flint and use a bow-drill, before trying to set fire with the magnified sun's rays, flint and steel, and then finally to safety matches and the gas lighter.

They come away from this activity with a new-found appreciation of the skill involved in technologising fire and an understanding of just how convenient this single technology has become for us today.
