International College Hong Kong

Alistair Kanaan

Teacher Of Film, Media, P.E and Free Learning

Why did you want to become a teacher?

I wanted to live in a variety of exciting countries around the world and be able to share my knowledge and experiences with others.

What is your first memory from school?

That early enthusiasm which centred on competing with my classmates to see who could answer the questions first.

What makes a ‘good day’ at school?

Good connection with the students and a sense that they have been truly engaged with the classes.  And that they have laughed on cue at all my jokes!

If I walked into your classroom on a typical afternoon, what would I see going on?

Depends which of my many subjects. If it were a film class hopefully you’d catch a glimpse of their quality video essays or even better witness a stage of the creative production process.

What are your “trapped on a desert island” books or movies?

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle maintenance by Robert Pirsig

The Book Of the New Sun Trilogy by Gene Wolfe

Bernard Sampson series by Len Deighton

Twin Peaks series 1,2,3

What is the hardest thing about being a teacher?

Remembering that each class and student is different and constantly adapting to these needs.

What inspires you?

Watching my I.B students final films.

What is your greatest accomplishment?

Inspiring students who really struggled with other aspects of academic life and helping them get into Film School.
