Chris Holland

Teacher of Mathematics

Why did you want to become a teacher?

I took a circuitous route to my career in teaching. I studied engineering in university and worked in that field before my desire to travel and work more with young people brought me to Korea to teach English. What was supposed to be a year abroad turned into nearly two decades and a love for my newfound career.

What is your first memory from school?

I remember being a bit scared and nervous my first day of kindergarten. After a warm welcome and reassurance from my teacher, I felt right at home. I try to keep jarring adjustments like these in mind while welcoming new students to our campus.

What makes a ‘good day’ at school?

Students having fun while learning, engaging with students in the corridors, and seeing students grow.

If I walked into your classroom on a typical afternoon, what would I see going on?

You would probably see students comfortable in their learning environments, asking and answering questions, and quite a bit of laughter and silliness.

What are your “trapped on a desert island” books or movies?

Movie: GATTACA, a sci-fi movie with an important message about Growth Mindset.

Book: The Beach, by Alex Garland.

What is the hardest thing about being a teacher?

Attempting to reach every child, every day.

What inspires you?

People achieving their goals while being kind to others.

What is your greatest accomplishment?

Earning my teaching certificate and master’s degree while already working a full-time job.

What would students be surprised to find out about you?

That there was once a time I had hair.
