International College Hong Kong

Jenny Wu

Teacher of Science

Why did you want to become a teacher?

I have always loved learning new languages and getting acquainted with the worldviews of different cultures. Teaching in international schools allows me to do this and is a great way to connect with others who have a diverse background, teachers and students alike.

What is your first memory from school?

Becoming best friends with the girl I sat behind in elementary school in Shenzhen.

What makes a ‘good day’ at school?

Hearing hilarious alternate interpretations of vocabulary or concepts learned in class.

If I walked into your classroom on a typical afternoon, what would I see going on?

All kinds of experiments going at once, where everyone is doing something uniquely fun to them.

What’s the funniest thing a child has ever said to you?

There was this kid in my class who drew hilarious comics using the vocabulary and concepts we learned at the end of every class. They were all kinds of misinterpreted and misconstrued on purpose, so funny.

What are your “trapped on a desert island” books or movies?

Liziqi’s ultimate survival channel on Youtube.

What is the hardest thing about being a teacher?

The “why do we have to learn this” even after you show them where this knowledge is used in the real world and fun practicals. Complaining is no way to go. Find something fun within the topic to do!

What inspires you?

The successful  sustainability projects around the world like the vanishing deserts, the floating solar farms, and the saline water grown rice.

What is your greatest accomplishment?

Getting grants from the HHMI to do scientific research. Getting students struggling very much with family issues to graduate strong from high school and go on to great universities.

What would the students be surprised to find out about you?

I failed all my classes except math and PE in six grade when I moved from China to the U.S. because I was just beginning to learn English. Teachers were so surprised and delighted that I got As in eighth grade.
