Civil Engineering, Delft University of Technology

Vincent de Bont studied Civil Engineering at Delft University of Technology. He says that he flourished after joining ICHK.

What did you most enjoy about your time at ICHK?

The people. During my time at ICHK I got to meet a majority of the students and teachers. This was possible through the different activities organized by ICHK, ranging from a sports-day to after school activities. I've coordinated some of these activities, and even had a chance to supervise a camping trip of the Year 9s. Also within my year there was always a good atmosphere, which allowed for some memorable moments.

How do you feel that teachers at ICHK prepared you for life after school?

The teachers were really helpful with advice and university applications. I had the advantage that I already knew what university I wanted to go to and what course to apply for. It being a Dutch university, however, still made it complicated. The teachers assisted me in the application process as much as possible, and it all turned out well.

How do you think that ICHK differs from other schools?

The community aspect of a small school. I've only spent two years at ICHK, joining from a local school in The Netherlands. Not being able to speak English at the same level as most of your fellow students in the beginning can form a barrier. At ICHK however this is not the case. My English improved quickly and I never felt left out. I think that's the biggest difference between ICHK and other international schools in Hong Kong.

What were the key skills that you learnt at ICHK?

The key skills I learned at ICHK were social skills and leadership. When I arrived at ICHK I was a relatively shy person. The environment created by the school allowed me to flourish and step out of my comfort zone.

Any significant moments / highlights / achievements in your life that you may like to share, and do you think your time at ICHK helped you prepare for them?

This year I joined the board of a student sports association, S.H.C. Scoop Delft, as the treasurer. This was a great opportunity to experience and to learn to head an association with over 270 active members. ICHK helped me prepare for this by allowing me to experience leading smaller groups and activities, and encouraging me to step out of my comfort zone.
