Year 7 students took part in our annual Human Technologies event, The Happening, marking an important step in their immersion into the ICHK community.

Now in its fourth year, this communal event has become a cornerstone of our Term 1 calendar, offering students an invaluable opportunity to connect, reflect, and celebrate the art and craft of being human.

The Happening is about more than just having fun; it’s an intentional manifestation of ICHK's central aim: teaching students how to be. Learning to be, we believe, is especially important in the age of AI. While AI excels at "left-brain" technical tasks—processing data, executing algorithms, and storing information—it cannot replicate the "right-brain" qualities of intuition, creativity, and connection that are cultivated in experiences like The Happening.

Drawing on Ian McGilchrist's work, we frame this distinction in terms of big K (tacit, experiential knowledge) and small k (factual, technical knowledge). By engaging in communal, reflective, and playful activities, students develop the big K skills essential for navigating the complexities of human relationships, creativity, and emotional resilience. These are qualities AI cannot replace, and they remind us of what it truly means to be human.

Once again, a heartfelt thank you goes out to the entire ICHK team who helped bring this event to life—whether by organising activities, preparing food, ensuring smooth logistics, or simply cheering students on. A special mention goes to our Year 13 Catering Team, who cooked up a feast - the epitome of the Happy, Confident and Intelligent Warriors we graduate.
