International College Hong Kong

Scarlette Leung

Teacher of Chinese

Why did you want to become a teacher?

I am passionate in passing on my knowledge and life experience to students. I especially enjoy giving guidance to students and seeing them gradually improve.

What is your first memory from school?

I was a chatty girl back in primary school. Growing up in a local HK primary school, I remember I was told off by a teacher because I was talking too much between lessons. From that incident onward, I learned that being quiet means being behaved at school.

What makes a ‘good day’ at school?

Students are focused in learning and enjoy the moment of achievement after working hard.

If I walked into your classroom on a typical afternoon, what would I see going on?

Students being focused in learning new knowledge. Students trying hard to apply their language knowledge into different scenarios.

What’s the funniest thing a child has ever said to you?

I admit I am not a good singer. During the first year of teaching, I was singing a Japanese kid song to my Japanese class (lower primary). One student said loudly in front of everyone, ‘teacher, you are off note!’

What are your “trapped on a desert island” books or movies?

My favourite author is called Long Ying-tai 龍應台 from Taiwan. Her recent book is about her daily experience of taking care of her aged mother. She said ‘Why didn’t I treat her like my best girl friend?’ I had to keep wiping my tears when reading. This book reminded me to treasure my time with my aging parents and to get to ‘know’ their stories before it’s too late.

What is the hardest thing about being a teacher?

There is always not enough time to realize all the good ideas.

What inspires you?

The real word, newspaper, the students.

What is your greatest accomplishment?

Getting students interested in something which they hated.

What would the students be surprised to find out about you?

I swore that I didn’t want to be a teacher when I was choosing university subjects. English was indeed my strongest subject back in secondary school.
