Peony Tan

Medicine, University of New South Wales

Peony Tan studied Medicine at the University of New South Wales in Australia. She says that the teachers at ICHK prepared her well for the challenges of university life.

What did you most enjoy about your time at ICHK?

I really enjoyed the tight community and relationships I had with my classmates and teachers. I especially enjoyed the small classes where it felt more like a study group rather than a classroom. The small classes made me feel well supported which contributed to my academic achievements.

How do you feel that teachers at ICHK prepared you for life after school?

I feel that teachers at ICHK really impressed upon us about thinking and acting like adults, especially during the IB years. This prepared me for university as I started to think and act more maturely, as well as make critical decisions for myself.

How do you think that ICHK differs from other schools?

ICHK prides itself in having small classes with lower student to teacher ratios compared to other schools. Teachers were always available and ready for one on on help, which was really important to me. This also allows students to form closer relationships with their peers and teachers, enabling an environment where students feel comfortable in voicing their opinions in the classroom.

What were the key skills that you learnt at ICHK?

A key skill I learnt at ICHK was how to be independent, and not to always rely on others. I learned to be resourceful in my own way, and to utilise the concept of self-directed learning when I'm struggling before seeking for guidance. I found this skill to be very applicable in university life, as you are expected to figure things out for yourself most of the time.
