New Deep Learning

Another incredible round of Deep Learning has been enjoyed by students this week.

They have enjoyed a series of creative experiences, extending learning beyond the classroom, and exploring different features of the curriculum in more detail.

A total of 19 units was on offer with something for all interests, whether the Arts, Humanities, Science or Sport. The core principle is that all units offer opportunities to develop a range of transferable skills, such as critical thinking, problem solving, communication, collaboration, the ability to work under pressure and with good humour, which we believe are at the heart of education.

Students travelled all over the city, meeting different people and gathering a huge amount of knowledge in the process.

For the first time, an Aviation unit was offered, giving students the chance to dive into the fundamentals of aviation, blending engineering, meteorology, and aviation law; discovering the intricacies of flight and learning about airport operations.

A new Wetlands unit allowed students to learn about the essential work of environmental officers in preserving and rebuilding this ecosystem, and served to launch the ICHK wetland conservation project with HKU and MTR.

A Food and Culture group enjoyed a series of cooking and food tasting experiences to help them learn about wheat products from dumplings to noodles.

A Fortune Telling group explored methods of divination across different cultures and throughout history. Another group was introduced to the ancient art of glassblowing, learning how to gather, shape and inflate molten glass at the Glazden glass studios.

A Melting Pot unit allowed students to learn all about the different cultural backgrounds of people who have made the city their home. They visited cultural centres, met people from all over the world and sampled authentic food and drink.

Another group explored the Tanka or ‘fisher folk’, who are considered to be one of the indigenous people of Hong Kong, visiting a variety of locations and learning about ancient fishing techniques.

A Teaching 4 Learning unit allowed students to engage with learning with students at a local primary school. A Wild Night Out group enjoyed two unforgettable explorations of nature’s nightlife.

A new Trail Running unit took students out onto local trails and another group learned about drawing on location in Urban Sketching.

In Asia’s World City, students learned about of some of the most important historical and cultural events through a practical exploration of the city and what it has to offer. Other students learned about the life and work of Bruce Lee, woodwork and photography.

At school, a group worked with professional international circus arts master and clown, Mila, learning a number of performing arts including balloon sculpture, juggling, unicycling, bubble magic, acting and mime.

This was the third iteration of what will be a total of four Deep Learning experiences for students this year. Every term they will enjoy a period of immersive learning, practical opportunities and real life experiences outside of the confines of the classroom, which we believe challenge many of the established norms of mainstream education.

We thank all the staff members who worked so hard to provide such an amazing range of learning opportunities.
