ICHK Features in TES

ICHK’s innovative approaches have again attracted press attention.

The education publication TES has published an article about our decision to create a new and unique role, with a specific focus on ideas, theory and philosophy.

Former Head of School Toby Newton took up the role of Mission and Vision Architect in September and is working to address the gap between procedural learning and the deeper forms of understanding that young people actually need.

The position has been deliberately designed to sit outside the urgent flow of school life, and is about exploring ways in which schools can better serve students at a time of profound global transformation.

TES, which is a leading publication in the global education community, showed interest in our decision to create this role; and the ways in which we are cultivating the deeper, character-forming aspects of education, not just what can be efficiently produced and measured.

The article explores how we are deepening the ideational, theoretical and philosophical hinterland that sits behind our school’s approaches and programmes, as we navigate towards a new future of schooling and education.

It also discusses the differences between what we call ‘small-k knowledge’ and ‘Big-K Knowledge.’

The first is explicit, written, examinable knowledge—the usual focus of schools. The second is the embodied, experiential, moral and practical wisdom that develops slowly through lived experience and reflection.

At ICHK we have long advocated for a change in how we think about education — from a purely cognitive, outcome-driven process to one that nurtures emotional depth, authentic human connection, and the ground for wisdom.

The Mission and Vision Architect role allows us to explore new possibilities, ask important questions, and steward a vision for how schools might reframe their role.

We are very pleased that our innovations and approaches continue to be be shared with educators from around the world.
