Deep Learning Round 4

Another amazing round of Deep Learning has been enjoyed by students.

The programme featured an incredible series of creative study experiences, extending learning beyond the confines of the classroom, and giving students the chance to explore and delve into a feature of the curriculum in more detail.

Students have been testing their resilience and resolve at a variety of locations while getting hands-on with the crags and gorges of Hong Kong in ‘Exploring the Barren Rock’.

A group has been learning about the Tanka or ‘fisher folk’, who are considered to be one of the indiginous people of Hong Kong, while others have been enjoying the ancient art of glassblowing.

Another team has been exploring the links between food and culture throughout history, visiting local markets and enjoying hands-on cooking.

An Architecture group has been visiting some of Hong Kong’s most iconic buildings and learning about the design story behind them.

In ‘Melting Pot’ students have visited a number of cultural centres, met Hong Kongers who are from different parts of the world, and tasted authentic food and drink.

Others have been learning about the life and work of Bruce Lee, whilst the Wildlife team has been investigating the range of wildlife around Hong Kong and enjoyed research visits to Kadoorie Farm and Tin Shui Wai Wetland Park.

In the ‘Picture Perfect’ unit, students have been exploring the changes that Hong Kong has undergone over the last 100 years, exploring pop culture representations from film, TV, and still image from the 1950s and taking video footage and pictures to compare with the Hong Kong of today.

Year 7 students have all been taking part in the Independent Travel unit, learning how to find their way around Hong Kong. They have travelled to sites of historical and cultural interest across the territory, navigating their own routes and developing the key skills of collaboration, perseverance and problem solving, which are central to the ICHK philosophy.

Back at school, work has been continuing to develop, test and produce a Human Technologies board game and produce a series of custom built musical instruments.

DL4 was the fourth iteration of what will be a total of five Deep Learning experiences for students this year. They will enjoy a total of 18 days of immersive learning, practical opportunities and real life experiences outside of the confines of the classroom, which we believe challenge many of the established norms of mainstream education.

We thank all the staff members who worked so hard to provide such an amazing range of learning opportunities.
