Deep Learning Experiences

An amazing round of Deep Learning has been enjoyed by students this week.

They have enjoyed an incredible series of creative experiences, extending learning beyond the classroom, and giving them the chance to explore and delve into a feature of the curriculum in more detail.

A Fast and Ingenious group has been learning about transport infrastructure, and travelled around the Greater Bay Area. Another group has been introduced to the ancient art of glassblowing, learning how to gather, shape and inflate molten glass at the Glazden glass studio.

Handcraft students have been making skin care products and soy candles. A History group has been travelling across Hong Kong and learning about key historical events in the territory.

A Wildlife group has been investigating how to improve the school garden, the nature trail and the local area to make it a better haven for local wildlife.

A Paint and Stitch group has been learning to elevate their artistic skills by combining painting and embroidery on canvas. A Scientific Scavenger group has been combining a love of science with navigation around HK, visiting a number of museums, hunting for clues and learning a lot about the territory along the way.

A Technologies for Cooking group has been learning about the principles involved in the methodology of food preparation. They enjoyed an introduction to herbs and spices throughout history, explored food preservation methods, and took a trip through different cuisines over three days which were packed with moments of discovery joy and healthy cooking.

Other students have been taking part in watersports, making tessellations and learning the arts of woodwork, pottery and 3D printing.

Year 7 students all completed an introductory unit into wellbeing and positive thinking, which underpins everything we do at ICHK. Based upon the work of the Psychologist Martin Seligman, students enjoyed a number of different experiences designed to develop their understanding of Positive Emotion, Engagement, Positive Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment. These included canyoning, art, team-building games and a day at Disneyland or Ocean Park.

DL1 was the first iteration of what will be a total of four Deep Learning experiences for students this year. Every term they will enjoy a period of immersive learning, practical opportunities and real life experiences outside of the confines of the classroom, which we believe challenge many of the established norms of mainstream education.

We thank all the staff members who worked so hard to provide such an amazing range of learning opportunities.
