International College Hong Kong

Cycling Badge

During year 8, students learn how to master cycling and are taught road safety skills.

As as part of a special sporting unit in PE, they learn about bike control and manoeuvrability, bike repair skills, and increase their road safety awareness.

After learning the basic skills of control and handling, signals and safety rules, they then sit a proficiency test at school.

Successful completion results in them being awarded their cycling badge.

Learning to ride a bike is a great vehicle to independence, and the experience of sticking with learning a new skill despite repeated falls and wobbles is a valuable one that further develops a growth mindset and is transferred into other area of study.

At ICHK we have our own fleet of bikes, which we use for fitness and to enjoy and access the local area as an alternative to bus travel. Students use them to venture into the local area with staff, enjoying its natural beauty and Hakka villages on two wheels. This hands-on approach to education not only deepens their understanding of the world but also fosters a sense of independence and self-reliance.
