Chinese Language Immersion Trip
Students of Chinese enjoyed a language immersion experience.
Year 7 students visited Tai Po wet market, where they sampled lunch, engaged in shopping and interviewed stall holders.
Working in groups, the students ordered their own food, shopped for groceries, compared prices in different shops and asked shop owners questions related to their jobs.
The exercise allowed them to work in collaboration to develop their language skills. It was designed to gently push them out of their comfort zones and to develop a growth mindset, which are key to the ICHK approaches.
Chinese teachers were impressed by the students’ bravery in communicating with strangers.
The students were able to work on their problem solving skills, including using an octopus card in a situation where cash was not available; adapting interview questions and dealing with incorrect orders.
The trip led to great steps forward in learning and as well as developing skills like patience and resilience, it allowed the students to practise their Chinese in a real life setting.
