+1 Centre Art Exhibition

A wonderful exhibition of work by +1 Centre students has been showcased at school.

Parents and staff joined to celebrate their work and the collaboration between Music and Art in our White Cube Space.

Ms Phoebe and Ms Shiba, the +1 Centre teachers of the Arts, curated an interactive experience to showcase the students' journey in the Arts.

The work of Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky inspired part one of the exhibition. Kandinsky, famously known as one of the pioneers of Western Abstraction, used his neurological condition of Synesthesia, the ability to see sound as colours and shapes, to guide his work, creating over 600 pieces and showing that using the strengths of our neurodivergence can enhance our lives and produce greatness.

With this as a stimulus, Ms Phoebe guided the students to explore using different instruments to create collaborative pieces of music in groups as part of their music lessons. Ms Shiba then shared this music with the students to inspire their artwork, which they created as large-scale pieces using a variety of techniques and media in their Art lessons.

Continuing the theme of the strengths of neurodivergence, part two of the exhibition showcased the students' work from term one, focusing on "Minds of All Kinds". The focal point of this was a large collaborative mixed-media piece that highlighted their personal strengths, interests, and talents, sharing them in colour to show growth and enjoyment.

The students also explored the "darker" areas of neurodivergence, the struggles and difficulties that are faced and represented this with a tonal piece. To complement this were smaller individual pieces sharing their responses to what it means to be neurodiverse.

During the afternoon, the students greeted their guests and presented their Music and Art work, explaining the process and thought behind their pieces. Alongside the exhibition, the Foodwise students served canapés and refreshments they had prepared, inspired by the artworks' colours and shapes, to their guests.

It was a wonderful afternoon, celebrating the power of neurodiversity in enhancing creativity and expression as incredible strengths.
