At ICHK, we believe that some of the most important learning happens beyond the walls of the classroom.

We take great pride in being at the forefront of outdoor education in Hong Kong. For many years, outdoor learning has been an integral part of our curriculum, not simply as an occasional enrichment activity, but as a carefully designed way of helping students understand themselves, one another and the world around them.

Our remarkable location gives us an extraordinary natural classroom. Surrounded by country parks, streams, mangroves, hills and spectacular scenery, we are able to use the environment as a living resource for learning across the curriculum. Students investigate rivers and waterfalls, explore stream ecology and rock formations, discover local history and geology, and observe species in their natural habitats. A history hike or mangrove exploration can bring learning to life in ways that no textbook can quite replicate.

But outdoor learning is about much more than acquiring knowledge.

When students step outside, they encounter situations that require them to communicate, collaborate, make decisions, solve problems and adapt to changing circumstances. They learn to persevere when something is difficult, to listen to others, to take responsibility and, importantly, to recognise that they are capable of more than they may have imagined.

These opportunities begin in the lower years, when students start to explore and understand their local environment. As they grow older, the level of responsibility increases. Our senior students undertake the HKAYP and increasingly embrace their roles as Outdoor Leaders, supporting younger students during outdoor days, mangrove explorations, World War II trench outings, stream hikes and abseiling activities.

These days provide a wonderful example of what outdoor learning can achieve. Our older students become mentors and role models: they lead games, share stories, support younger children in unfamiliar environments and help them engage with nature through fun and purposeful activities. At the same time, our Outdoor Leaders are learning what it really means to take responsibility for others. They develop self-confidence, communication, leadership, problem-solving and personal management skills. They also experience something equally important: the value of service and their contribution to the wider school community.

The skills developed through these experiences, leadership, teamwork, resilience, planning, organisation, communication and dynamic problem-solving, are not confined to the outdoors. They are skills that our students will draw upon throughout their lives.

Our Outdoor Leadership Award recognises this development, providing students with a meaningful record of their contribution and growth. Students can earn our Outdoor Leader Certificates which are a valuable addition to university portfolios.

Meaningful outdoor learning must be accompanied by high standards of safety and care. Our programme is led by experienced outdoor educators, and we are proud to hold the Hong Kong Outdoor Learning Association's Provider Badge. This reflects our commitment to robust safety and risk management, child safeguarding, and comprehensive staff training and recruitment practices.

Ultimately, outdoor learning reflects something fundamental about the education we want to provide at ICHK. We want our students to be curious about the world, comfortable with challenge, confident in working with others and willing to take responsibility. We want them to understand that learning is not something that happens only at a desk.

That is why we take outdoor learning so seriously at ICHK, and why it is such an important part of the experience we offer our students.
