The Happening

Year 7 students enjoyed a wonderful event at school, aimed at uniting them as a community of learners.

A first time event, ‘The Happening’ included a range of fun, hands-on activities and a BBQ dinner and was specially designed to ensure students enjoyed each other’s company.

Each participant enjoyed a drum jam, capture the flag, balloon twisting and a Human Technologies card game. In addition, students worked together to prepare ingredients for the BBQ: cutting open buns, chopping veggies, arranging the food prep area and testing that the system worked.

The event aligned with our Year 7 mission, which is to help students become ‘happy, confident, intelligent warriors’, and our HT curriculum which encourages students to experience school in more positive ways, whilst developing a sense of the art and craft of being human.

The event was put together by staff from the Human Technologies department, and was intended to bring students together, allowing them to work in unison to create something special and memorable. The kinds of unique experiences enjoyed by students yesterday will be referred back to during future Human Technologies classes, where we consider the importance of “vibrant, lived experiences”, the likes of which cannot be had on your own, or in front of a screen.

As a school we believe that shared events like these are important occasions for mutual growth and cohesion. It also provided an opportunity for parents to join us in a community-centred occasion which has always been so integral to ICHK.

We’d like to offer a big thank you to the HT and Year 7 teams, to ICHK Primary for lending us their BBQs, and to Impossible Foods for generously providing 50 free plant-based burger patties.

‘The Happening’ will now become a permanent fixture in the year 7 calendar and it will be reflected on during the year ahead, as a way to explore various learning experiences.
