Starling Inlet Fieldwork

Students have been working on ICHK’s unique citizen science project.

Year 9s experienced science fieldwork days around the coast of Starling Inlet.

After a series of preparatory lessons, they spent time collecting water samples to test, as well as collecting and recording coastal waste from the nearby mangroves and beaches.

It marked the continuation of the ICHK Starling Inlet Almanac, a long-term data-collection project which is run by the school to monitor the environmental health of Starling Inlet.

Our Science and Outdoor departments are leading the initiative, guiding the students as they develop as citizen scientists.

The project, which has been embedded into the Science curriculum, was inspired by the work of hermit scientists who keep detailed logs in their locality, which are providing invaluable insights into climate patterns.

By collecting samples twice a year, students are able to catalogue the health of the estuary and make important contributions to environmental work.
