Spanish Language and Culture Day

Students of Spanish enjoyed a wonderful language and culture day in Lamma.

The special excursion was organised to enrich their studies about the popular summer solstice, La Noche de San Juan (St. John’s bonfires).

Students from years 7-10 and year 12 joined together to mark the feast of St. John the Baptist, which is one of the most important traditional festivals in Spain.

Under the guidance of their Spanish teachers and outdoor educators, the students enjoyed a series of language challenges and games related to the fiesta.

The San Juan bonfires see people write down their burdens and the negativities they wish to get rid of. They throw their papers into the fire, and dance around them, as part of a symbolic cleansing.

Jumping over waves crashing on the shore is also seen as a symbolic act of purification and renewal, and is thought to bring good luck for the coming year.

Students finished the day with a traditional Spanish feast at the Dale Candela restaurant.

The excursion was planned ahead of the official St John’s day on June 23rd, and Lamma was chosen because of its strong Hispanic connections.

It led to huge steps forward in learning for the students and we thank all the staff who supported, and the restaurant staff who created a true Spanish tapas experience for the students.
