Learning with Experts from HKO

The coastline beside ICHK was the setting for an extraordinary day of hands-on learning with experts from the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO).

Students from years 9, 10 and the +1 Centre stepped out of the classroom to explore coastal hazards, storm surges and tsunami emergency preparedness.

In an exclusive collaboration with the HKO, they were given the chance to work directly alongside Senior Scientific Officer Ms. Queenie Lam and her team of meteorology and marine experts.

The event was planned to coincide with the UN International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction.

Our unique location provided the perfect real-world classroom, allowing students to connect scientific concepts with the environment around them. They were able to consider how coastal events occur, the risks they may pose to coastal communities, and the importance of being prepared. They were encouraged to observe their surroundings, ask questions and think carefully about how our local geography influences both the risks we face and the ways we can plan for them.

The experience gave students a rare opportunity to learn directly from professionals responsible for understanding and monitoring natural hazards.

We are extremely grateful to Ms Lam and the Hong Kong Observatory team for sharing their expertise with our students and providing such a memorable and meaningful learning experience.
