Kindness Walk

ICHK students joined a Kindness Walk, volunteering and serving food to the homeless.

Students from the SMT, together with three members of the SRC took part in the walk in Tai Kok Tsui.

The two hour walk was organised by ImpactHK, a charity which supports the homeless in Hong Kong.

The students met with charity CEO Jeff Rotmeyer, who gave them a briefing about the issue, and explained some of the reasons why people become homeless. He spoke about the importance of noticing those on the streets as people, not as homeless.

The students then collected supplies, including water, biscuits, hard boiled eggs and bananas, from the charity’s headquarters before setting out on a walk around the area.

During the walk, students distributed food and other essentials to a number of people experiencing homelessness.

They were very attentive and careful and greeted the individuals with kind smiles and warm wishes.

As they walked, their volunteer guide explained the difficult situations people on the streets can find themselves in and how damaging it is for their physical and mental health. He also discussed some ways we can help, particularly by showing kindness and recognising that they are just people who can't find a way out.

The walk ended at the ImpactHK Studio 29 where students were given a tour, and met with staff who explained more about the work that is done there, including cooking classes, haircuts and the exchanging of clothes. They also explained that the charity is entirely dependent on donations.

The walk was a powerful experience and the students all expressed a desire to help the charity again. At ICHK our students are encouraged to be thoughtful, to care for others, to understand the importance of serving the community and how, through their actions, they can make a difference. We commend all those who took part in this voluntary work, and the kindness they have shown.
