ICHK’s approaches to learning and technology have been showcased at another major education conference.

Deputy Head of School Ross Parker was a keynote speaker at the AI and the Future of Education conference in Yokohama.

His talk entitled ‘The Things I Know’, explored learning and how the things we know make us who we are, despite us forgetting much of what we have ever learned.

It asked how, in an age of AI, do we square learning with becoming? What exactly do we need to know in a world which places knowledge at our fingertips, and how do we help our students learn it? In the end, participants were asked to consider that perhaps the importance of school lies in the impressions it leaves on students.

Ross also ran a workshop, entitled ‘The Information Myth: What We Get Wrong About Learning’ which took attendees on a journey through time, telling the story of how our species has learned, accumulated, shared and synthesised information, from the best way to knap a flint blade, to effective ways to treat disease. Ross explained that when we’ve learned new things, we’ve seen how it has made our lives better, leading us to believe that more information is always better.

He then asked attendees to question this, to think about how AI, in amplifying the information deluge of the digital age, might make things worse, not better.

Attendees were asked to think about how schools might look if attention was turned back to human-scale information, rather than chasing the next technological revolution in education.

As a public speaker, Ross has presented at schools, companies, conferences and workshops around the world.

The latest presentation adds to a growing list of conferences that our staff have been invited to in recent years. We have seen a rapid increase in international interest in our innovations, programmes and curricula, and we now regularly present at education conferences and summits, host workshops and meet with educators who are keen to learn about our approaches.
