International College Hong Kong

Flora Lai

Director of Upper School: IB Coordinator

Why did you want to become a teacher?

I started working as a volunteer in schools when I was at university and fell in love with working with children/young people.

What is your first memory from school?

My first and most vivid memories of being at school are from when I was around 5, at a local kindergarten in Hong Kong. I remember being made “monitor” of the class and loved having the responsibility of helping the teachers with the simplest of tasks such as taking the little book which they used to take registers back in those days, to the reception area which was only about 10 metres from the classroom. I also have fond memories of little dance shows I did in kindergarten and so I actually wanted to become a dancer before I wanted to become a Scientist/teacher.

What makes a ‘good day’ at school?

One of my best days at ICHK was when I spent about 6 hours turning my classroom into a “jungle”, putting together resources, and subsequently did an interactive lesson on biodiversity with my Year 12 Environmental Systems and Societies class - they absolutely loved it.

If I walked into your classroom on a typical afternoon, what would I see going on?

Students wanting to learn and engage in whatever activity that is happening in the room.

What’s the funniest thing a child has ever said to you?

When I was pregnant with my son Calum, I had students who asked me, very seriously, “What do we need to do Ms Lai if you go into labour during our class?!"

What are your “trapped on a desert island” books or movies?

I recently read one of my favorite novels so far and it is one of those books that I don’t think I would get tired of reading - it’s called Nightingale. It won’t help me survive but it will keep my hopes for escaping from the island up because of the inspiring characters in it.

What is the hardest thing about being a teacher?

Continuously juggling between our different roles, and also continuously learning and trying to improve as a teacher.

What inspires you?

Books, articles, movies of inspiring stories and people.

What is your greatest accomplishment?

Being a person who tries their best to love every moment of life.

What would the students be surprised to find out about you?

I am a bassoon player (though I haven’t played in a while!), and a Cantonese Opera performer.
