Amanda Luk

Teacher of Chinese

Why did you want to become a teacher?

I didn’t choose to be a teacher when I graduated from high school. I studied in a teachers’ university based on my academic performance in high school and also through family persuasion. Through the teaching practice I completed, I found my passion in teaching - it’s a good way to share one’s life experience and inspiring younger generation is always satisfying and rewarding.

What is your first memory from school?

Always lining up for something and listening to the teachers.

What makes a ‘good day’ at school?

Playing with friends and getting praised by a teacher.

If I walked into your classroom on a typical afternoon, what would I see going on?

Students are on their assigned tasks and I would be interacting with individuals.

What’s the funniest thing a child has ever said to you?

There’s a basketball inside Ms Luk’s tummy! (When I was pregnant).

What are your “trapped on a desert island” books or movies?

The Count of Monte Cristo, Pirates of the Caribbean

What is the hardest thing about being a teacher?

Finding ways to connect with different individuals as a teacher.

What inspires you?

Being the witness of a student’s growth in becoming a better human being.

What is your greatest accomplishment?

Changing some students’ attitudes towards learning Chinese, from really negative views to some positive ones, and also helping them get through exams.

What would the students be surprised to find out about you?

When they find out that I had heard about the Premier League and that I do Thai-boxing.
