Alexander Mrkich
Teacher of MathematicsWhy did you want to become a teacher?
I come from a family of teachers, as my mother, brother and sister are all teachers. After graduating as an engineer, I found the part of work I liked best was explaining things to others, and so I made the switch to the profession that I always meant to be part of.
What is your first memory from school?
Being happily dressed in all new clothes, and a smart new backpack.
What makes a ‘good day’ at school?
Seeing the light go off in someone’s eyes when something that has challenged them is now clear. It’s everything that a teacher wants.
If I walked into your classroom on a typical afternoon, what would I see going on?
Admittedly, you would probably see students crushing through calculations. I have always thought practise makes perfect, and that students should focus on acquiring core skills in math.
What are your “trapped on a desert island” books or movies?
Books: A Christmas Carol, I, Claudius, The Manticore.
Movies: Aliens, The Godfather, The Empire Strikes Back, The Shawshank Redemption.
What is the hardest thing about being a teacher?
Many students find math to be their most hated subject, and I understand that many people legitimately don’t like it. It can be difficult to make math classes enjoyable (even tolerable) for them.
What inspires you?
Mother Nature and her work.
What is your greatest accomplishment?
Going back to school as a grown-up.
