Why did you want to become a teacher?

One of the great things about being a teacher is finding other people to share your passions and interests, no matter what they are.

What is your first memory from school?

The nice woman in the brown uniform who comforted me as I cried when my grandma left me.

What makes a ‘good day’ at school?

Adding value to the school community in a myriad number of ways...  Of course, teaching a good lesson which students enjoy is part of that.  Seeing students develop their understanding of the world around us, seeing that they can be productive and useful to others.  Helping someone to feel better about themselves and have a positive day.  Putting right any injustices that have occurred.  Executing a planned trip or lesson.  Helping a parent in raising their child and the gratitude you sense from them. Seeing students pushing themselves to their limits both physically and psychologically. Learning something new.  There are many good days to have as a teacher at school!

If I walked into your classroom on a typical afternoon, what would I see going on?

Generally, a lot of sweating, heavy breathing and red faces.

What’s the funniest thing a child has ever said to you?

But Mum…I mean Mr Chan!

What is the hardest thing about being a teacher?

There is always something, a lesson, a coaching session, a teaching resource, a policy that could be slightly better.

What inspires you?

A quotation that is often attributed to Gandhi - “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

What is your greatest accomplishment?

Being a part of a team that is building a school of which I am proud to send my children.

What would the students be surprised to find out about you?

They always seem to be very surprised to learn that I wear glasses.
