Kindergarten Plaque
In the 1970s Hong Lok Yuen Estates was granted permission to build the estate with a requirement from the Government that a school of not less than 12 classrooms was established. After the first houses were developed, a steering committee of parent residents was established to assist HLYE in researching what type of school would best suit the needs of residents.
In 1982 Orchard Kindergarten started operating in a show house in 2nd Street with 19 children and three teachers. That year a joint venture agreement was signed with HLYE to construct a school.
Hong Lok Yuen International School was opened in 1983, and two years later, it was agreed to go ahead with a purpose built Kindergarten.
Orchard Kindergarten was officially opened on May 23, 1987 by Lady Akers-Jones J.P, and this plaque remains in place to honour the very beginnings.
