Kate Mahon

Why did you want to become a teacher?
My original plan was to be an NBA player. But then I realised I really enjoy being around young people. Learning from them, having a laugh with them, understanding how to support them better. I can’t think of a single other career where I would get the same buzz.
What is your first memory from school?
My first memory from school is telling all my classmates I had a giant water slide at my house. I didn’t.
What makes a ‘good day’ at school?
A good day… is one with lots of smiles from both the students and from my fantastic colleagues. At HLY, a good day involves plenty of time outside, some thought provoking lessons, and a random dance off or two.
If I walked into your classroom on a typical afternoon, what would I see going on?
Enjoying a picture book or a class novel together…
What’s the funniest thing a child has ever said to you?
I asked students to reply to a ‘check in’ email I had sent them.
One student said “but we haven’t even been learning about chickens”
NZ accent for the win.
What are your “trapped on a desert island” books or movies?
“Muriel’s Wedding”
Is an all time favourite.
And any movies from Taika Waititi
I have too many favourite books to list here.
What is the hardest thing about being a teacher?
Switching off at the end of the day.
Achieving a healthy work/life balance.
What inspires you?
Mrs Jennie Martin
What is your greatest accomplishment?
Transitioning from life as a full time athlete, to life as a teacher.
What would the students be surprised to find out about you?
I love country music.
