Chinese Studies

ICHK Hong Lok Yuen has been at the forefront of teaching Chinese to international students for more than 30 years.

Our team of highly experienced teachers delivers an exciting and comprehensive programme, which is enriched through language trips and cultural celebrations.

Small classes allow for differentiated instruction and all students receive a 40 minute lesson every day.  Teachers use audio and visual resources, ICT and guided reading books to bring the curriculum to life and help students to develop as independent learners.

Our curriculum focuses on the four main skills of speaking, reading, listening and writing. Students also learn about Chinese language and culture.

In Nursery and Reception the focus is on listening and speaking, and Chinese is taught through songs, rhymes, role-play, stories and games.

In the Primary Years, students work in different groups according to their abilities and language background. For children who have no background in Chinese, the curriculum focuses on the spoken language of Putonghua with some reading and writing.

For children who can already speak Chinese (either Cantonese or Putonghua) there is additional focus on reading and writing. All students are taught traditional characters as these surround them in their daily life and environment.

The ability to meet the needs of students from many diverse language backgrounds, is a real strength of our programme.

Staff work closely with our secondary colleagues to ensure there is a smooth transition into Year 7 languages and beyond.
