IB Q&A Coffee Meeting for Y7 & 8 Parents

Although the IB Diploma Programme may seem many years away, some parents may have questions, concerns or misunderstandings about the programme and what it can offer. To address this, Mr. Spadafora, Head of Senior School and IB Coordinator, would like to hold an informal Q & A Coffee Meeting on Wednesday, 29th February from 3:30 to 4:15. This meeting is targeted at Year 7 and 8 parents. It will be an opportunity to ask questions and discuss the IB.

Please RSVP Ms. Bethany Chau at bchau@ichk.edu.hk if you would like to attend. Formal presentations on the IB take place in Y9 and again in Y11 when students pick their senior school courses.

Sports Assembly

My thanks to Mr Blain for taking this week’s assembly. The focus was on sport and how we can not only celebrate our successes, but also seek to develop as risk takers and as principled and caring individuals. Mr Blain presented the latest in a series of trophies for rugby that our students have won. These trophies related to a recent tournament in which over 60 of our students participated last term playing against much older opponents.

Inter-schools Golf Tournament – Friday Feb 17, 2012

Many of you will no doubt be aware that we have several talented golfers amongst our students, and today at the Kau Shai Chau Golf Glub in Sai Kung, our team will compete against other schools. We will let you know how well they do in next week’s bulletin!

AYP – Feb 18 and 19th (Year 10)

The AYP Bronze practice expedition is canceled for this weekend and is being rescheduled for later this month. The illness of some students and staff makes this change necessary. Mr. Chan will discuss the new date with students next week. This weekend is expected to be much colder so I am sure they will welcome the change.

The Y8s have just finished working on their remote control cars and I thought you might like to see the results. There is one car for each house and two staff cars (one inspired by Ms. Goldthorpe and conceived by Kelsie and George – can you guess which one?) The Y8s will be doing some racing over the coming weeks, which will be followed by a dynasty race.

MUN

On Wednesday, our Hong Kong Model United Nations Team (who represent Canada and Indonesia this year) took part in the last Caucus of the year at Victoria Shanghai Academy school in Aberdeen. This is the last meeting prior to the full Security Council and General Assembly debates on Friday and Saturday of next week. The event takes place at West Island School and spectators are welcome to drop in.

Creative Curriculum Day

What is creativity? What does it look like in action?

Friday, 2nd March marks the first annual Creative Curriculum Day at ICHK. The normal timetable will be collapsed and students from across the year groups will choose a subject area they are interested in pursuing, in some depth, for the day. Once in their groups, they will be presented with a thought-provoking question or quote and will be expected to work together to deconstruct it. They will then ‘create’ a tangible product by 2nd break (e.g., a dance performance, a newspaper, a mural, etc) which will be a response to the question/comment they have chosen. The best pieces of work in each group will be displayed for all to see and discussed in the last period.

To match our theme of creativity, we are encouraging all students to dress ‘creatively’ (not just a simple shirt and jeans, but something expressive) and, by doing so, contribute $20 to the St. James’ Settlement. Also, during breaks, the PE Dept. will organise some creative, off-the-wall games and some of our ‘talented’ buskers will be performing (for a donation to St.James’) around the school. To satisfy our hunger, some of our talented chefs will be creating delicacies and treats for us to savour.

It will be an exciting day of innovation, imagination and inventiveness!

ICHK Welcomes Swedish Interns

I am delighted to welcome Maria Lundqvist and Amanda Lundin from Umea University in Sweden to ICHK. They join us as part of an intern programme that we have established in order to benefit both the university and ICHK students.

Both Maria and Amanda have recently finished their Masters in Psychology. They will be working with our pastoral team (SWAT) and our pastoral leaders, Mrs Russell, Mrs Adelwhorer and Ms Walsh, to enhance our pastoral care by taking PSE lessons, helping with Homework Club, helping the SRC to develop leadership skills, and creating breaktime activities. They also come with other wonderful skills such as experience in girls’ football and media.

Please welcome them into our ICHK community – it will be a great opportunity for cultural exchange for both the interns and ourselves. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs Russell.

SEAMC 2012

Congratulations to Eva Yam (8.1), Kate Liu (8.2), Ambrose Li (9.2), Richard Yang (9.2), Ashley Kim (10.1) and Janice Hui (10.1) who have been selected to particpate in SEAMC 2012, which is being held in Singapore from Thursday 23rd Feburary to Sunday 26th February. For they past few weeks, they have been busy preparing for this competition with Mr Lam. With their enthusiasm and competitive spirit, I am sure they will represent ICHK well. Best of luck everyone!

Maths Contests

The Pascal (Y9), Cayley (Y10) and Fermat (Y11) Contests are an opportunity for students to have fun and to develop their mathematical problem solving ability. For those who emailed Mr Lam and indicated that they are interested in taking part, please go to the library on Friday 24th Feburary at 8:30 am.

Trinity Guildhall Speaking Examinations- 21st May 2012

Since August, the Year 8 cohort have been preparing for the Trinity Guildhall Speaking Examinations. The work involves prepares the students for the demands of our ‘working world’ where they will have to present themselves as confident and professional young people in interviews for further education, and finally in the workplace. We know that this world is ever expanding and highly competitive, and in preparing our young students in speech and presentation, we are equipping them with the skills that will be demanded of them in the future.

Many of our students have taken part in these examinations previously and have greatly benefitted from the experience. It is therefore hoped that our Year 8 students will take up this same opportunity to gain accreditation through the Trinity Guildhall Examinations.

Your child will be bringing home information about this in the coming week. The deadline for returning the correct paperwork and money is Tuesday 28th February.

Please contact Miss Goldthorpe with any questions.

HLYIS Art Exhibition

Our congratulations to the students of HLYIS who have produced some amazing pieces of art for their exhibition. Mrs Jupp, their art teacher, should be very proud and I would sincerely suggest you have a look before the works are taken down.

Best Regards

Head Of School Award

Congratulations to the following students who have won the Head of School Award for the December/January period.

Roy Ng, 7.2 for Outstanding Effort and Improvement in Humanities

Roy should be congratulated for the hugely positive change we have seen in his approach to learning. He showed great commitment and effort in his recent Humanities project, and should be proud of the fact that his work was completed to a very high standard. By helping others recently, Roy has also shown that he understands our ICHK values of vision.

William Christensen, 9.1 for Creative and Critical Thinking

William has demonstrated a willingness to ask himself hard questions that really push the boundaries of his knowledge. He is always thoughtful in class, trying his best to digest new ideas and put them together with his existing knowledge. For an ICT presentation he created excellent conceptual links with the wider world outside of his school, obviously taking the initiative to discuss life at work with his parents, and apply this to issues surrounding the use of ICT

Niko Helin, Y11 for CAS Leadership

Niko has demonstrated not only a very mature approach to learning but has also shown initiative and leadership with regards to the introduction of a new after school activity. Not only was he quite proactive recruiting and negotiating a time for this activity, but also he has shown great patience in coaching other students which has led to really enjoyable sessions.

Congratulations: Byron Tan, 9.1

Last week, Byron attended the 2-day KSC Junior Squad Golf Qualifier. In a magnificent display of skill, he was crowned champion of both days and has now been selected to be a member of the Elite Squad Team. Byron. you continue to amaze us! Well done! Please click here for the full result.

Byron, centre, back row.

Ching Ho Wan, 8.1 – Gymnastics

We are delighted to announce that Ching Ho will be participating in the All Hong Kong Inter-Secondary Schools Gymnastic Competition 2011-2012 in March/April. She won a medal in the vaulting competition last year and this year she will compete in free-style gymnastics and vaulting. We wish you lots of luck, Ching Ho, and can’t wait to hear the results later in two months’ time.

Exchange Programme – Nengren Middle School

As you will know from last week’s bulletin, students from Nengren Middle School in Jiangsu Province visited ICHK and their host families. On Saturday our exchange students and host families visited the Hong Kong History Museum to understand Hong Kong’s development and its culture. Later that afternoon, parents and students went hiking in Tai Po Kau to enjoy the beautiful countryside of Tai Po.

Through this exchange programme, both ICHK and Nengren students have developed their language skills and understanding of different cultures, values and communities. We would like to thank the 19 families who welcomed the students into their homes and made them feel part of their family.

We will hold a coffee morning this coming Monday, 13th February (10:00am – 11:00am) in the hall to say thank you to all the host families. We also welcome any other parents who are interested in their children joining the return trip or being a host family next time.

Year 7 Parent-Teacher-Student Consultations

On Wednesday, 15th February there will be an opportunity for Year 7 parents to meet with subject teachers. It is highly recommended that students attend. We have allocated 10 minute appointment times between 2:00pm and 7:00pm. All students should have made appointments this week.

CIS International Student Registry Service

Further to our initial visit from the Council of International Schools last week, we are pleased to announce that students in Y10 and 11 interested in receiving free admission information from CIS Member Colleges and Universities, now have the opportunity to participate in the annual CIS International Student Registry Service. Registering requires minimal effort and it will help students learn about colleges/universities that may be appropriate choices for their international post-secondary education. This is a free service and is just one of the many benefits that being part of the CIS community can bring to our school.

Global Issues Report by Sanjana Ravi

Going to Sha Tin college was a really fun experience. Schools such as: Island school, Renaissance College, Guangzhou Nanhu International School, Sha Tin College and International College Hong Kong were there to compete. The students in ICHK overall did a great job, and got their message through to the audience very clearly. The Y7s (Emily, Sanjana, Christy and Chloe) talked about Health Care and how it affects undeveloped countries as well as developed ones. We spoke clearly and confidently. The Y8s ( Connie, Alex and Nadia) were also great talking about child soldiers. They looked nervous at first, but became comfortable as their presentation went on. The Y9s (Kai, Christine and Jonathan) were also excellent. They talked about poverty and they seemed very confident and well prepared. They also put in a little humor in their speech, to connect with the audience. Overall we had a really enjoyable day, which gave us some good experience of public speaking in front of a wider audience.

Our Global Issues Teams with Mr Clarke.

Celebrate Valentine’s Day!

Very little is known about the true identity and story behind the man named St. Valentine, but February has always been known as the month to celebrate love, dating back to the Middle Ages! At ICHK we aim to celebrate Valentine’s Day next Tuesday (December 14) by asking that all students dress in RED and wear the colour of love. Please bring in $20, which will be donated to charity. The SRC are also organizing roses to be given to loved ones.

Congratulations to Richard Yang who has been honored by John Hopkins University for his outstanding performance in a programme organised by the Centre for Talented Youth. Richard scored in the 90th percentile on his SAT scores – the same test senior students take for entrance to universities within the United States (A fantastic achievement!).
Exchange Programme – Nengren Middle School

Our students were most excited with the arrival of the exchange students from a school just outside of Shanghai. The aim of such exchange programmes is for students to develop their language skills, and develop a better understanding of their culture, values and communities. It is also a great deal of fun and both sets of students seem to be enjoying the experience so far.

Rugby News

ICHK’s rugby teams were out in full strength for the Hong Kong Touch Association Winter Tournament on Friday 20 January. In all, around 60 ICHK students participated, nearly one-third of our school! I think we can be immensely proud to be part of a school that offers so many students the opportunity to represent us in inter-school sports.

Our U19 girls (remember, none of them even 16 yet!) came third overall in their division, winning a very tough third-place playoff after losing an equally intense semi-final. A special mention to Sarah Chamberlain, Captain, for her leadership both on and off the field.

Our youngest players, the U14 girls and boys (many of them actually under 12 and none of them over 13) also did extremely well. Both teams came second in their divisions. The rules called for the championship to be awarded on a coin toss, but our ICHK girls demanded a play-off game instead – they said they would rather lose in a play-off than win on a coin toss!

Our U16 girls (most of them just 12 and 13 years old) came home champions in their division, winning every game in their group. (Lynden Chiang, 8.3, was awarded the trophy for highest-scoring and fairest player in the age group.) This was another commanding performance from a team that has been training and playing together for nearly two years now.

Many thanks to Mr Chan, Ms Tsao, Mr Lo, Mr Statskey and Mr Blain for coaching such an outstanding group of students. Special thanks must go to Mr Statskey who gave up an entire day and did a brilliant job of coaching the Y7 boys. Thanks also to all the parents who were at King’s Park to support all our students, and to Mr White and all the staff for supporting the rugby programme.

Special mention must also go to our Y11 students, Fin Jupp and Scott Bouttle. As they were the senior members of the team, they took on the roles of coaching and leading the younger members of the squad. They were excellent in their leadership, encouragement and motivation. Well done, boys.

All students should have started to make appointments for you this week.

Please contact Ms Goldthorpe with any questions.

Early School Finish

The school day will end at 1.50pm on Wednesday 15th February due to the Year 7 Parent- Teacher- Student Consultations. Students will go home on their usual buses.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

The School Production

Please be aware that the students are now entering a very busy time with rehearsals for the school production. There are a few weekend rehearsals coming up that are compulsory for students to attend. Please take note of some of the date and time changes from the original schedule which was distributed to students in September. The students are responsible for getting to and from school and they must bring lunch with them.

Saturday 25th Feb 10am-6pm rehearsal (Costumes required)

Saturday 3rd March (Cancelled)

Saturday 10th March 10am-6pm rehearsal (Costumes required)

Sunday 11th March 10am-6pm rehearsal (Costumes required)

The show takes place on Thursday 15th and Friday 16th March at 7.30pm. The students will remain in school between school finishing and the performance.

We look forward to a wonderful show from the students. Please contact Ms Goldthorpe with any questions.

Maths Contests

The Pascal (Y9), Cayley (Y10) and Fermat (Y11) Contests are an opportunity for students to have fun and to develop their mathematical problem solving ability. The contests are written in school and supervised by teachers on Friday 24th February. Please email Mr Lam by Monday 6th February if you would like to take part in any of these contests.

U.S. University Information Session

If you are interested in sending your child to the U.S. for university, this information session may be appealing to you. Please click on the link below.

US University Info Session

Info for Year 11 Parents/Guardians

Year 11 are about to start a new Science unit that is part of the iGCSE syllabus, B8 Reproduction. It is taught from a biological viewpoint but also to enable students to make educated choices later in life in keeping with their family values.

Students will be asked to spend a homework session next week reading the objectives with you, and there is a box that you can sign to show that this has been done. This is to enable you to approach the topic in a way that you are comfortable with, and to discuss any questions your child may raise in a way you consider to be suitable.

Please feel free to contact Ms Lynch should you have any further queries.

Years 7-10 PSE

Years 7 – 10 students will soon begin a meaningful unit in the PSE curriculum. The unit is called ‘Relationships and Human Sexuality’. Some of the topics covered will include: normal adolescent growth and development including physical changes; relationships, for example; responsible dating, emotional challenges, and reproduction.

Our hope is that students will be able to discuss this important and occasionally sensitive topic with you at home. Sometimes this subject can be embarrassing for both parent and child but approaching it with a calm, relaxed attitude and a sense of humour can often help both parties overcome this. Asking your child about what they have been learning in PSE can be an easier way of approaching awkward issues.

Should you have any questions, please contact crussell@ichk.edu.hk

Global Issues

During Term 1, Years 7 – 9 students worked on a Global Issues task where they were challenged by intensive research and collaboration skills. Students were required to choose a global issue they felt passionate about and wished to research more extensively. Groups prepared a presentation for their classmates and were assessed accordingly. Given the calibre of presentations, Mr. Clarke will be taking a group of representatives from Years 7, 8 and 9 to Shatin College next Friday to represent ICHK in the Global Issues finals. This will be an exciting challenge for our students and also an opportunity to mingle and learn from others.

Tai Po Forest Trail Hike – Saturday

Tomorrow (Saturday) Mr Chan and other teachers and students will be taking part in a hike along the Tai Po Forest Trail. They will be meeting at 2 pm in the car park at Tai Po Kau forest just past Savannah Garden. All parents are welcome.

Best Regards

Roy White

Congratulations – Selene Lee Y10

Our congratulations to Selene for her 4th Place finish in an international art competition focused on the London Olympics. A ceremony was held recently in Hong Kong for the winners where she received her prize. Selene was one of 2000 artists who submitted works for the competition, and as you can tell from the photo below, she selected several iconic themes for her work including Abby Road. Well done Selene.

Green Power Hike

Three girls from ICHK (Team Green Warriors) Gigi Kong (7.1), June Chan (7.1) and Fiona Leung (7.2) won the 1st Runners Up prize in the Green Team Category last Saturday as part of the Green Power Hike competition. The finishing time was 1 hour 10 minutes 35 seconds, which was only four minutes behind the champions and faster than some of the winning adult teams in other categories! An amazing achievement!

From left to right, June, Fiona and Gigi.

Y11 Mock Exams Completed

Our Y11s, have just finished a full round of Mock iGCSE examinations. Nineteen papers in 8 days, plus a 10 hour practical art exam for Visual Arts students! Teachers will moderate the papers on the 30th of January to ensure accuracy and consistency of grading within a subject. Scripts will be returned shortly thereafter and a full report released on 17th February.

A special thanks to the following parents who assisted in the invigilation process: Paul Statskey, Carly Wong, Henri Olesen, Olga Quintana, Lowell Tin and Jenny Overman. They are becoming quite experienced invigilators!

We wish our Y11s much success in their grades.

Recruitment of Teachers

I am very pleased to announce that we have completed our recruitment of teachers for the next academic year. As mentioned in a previous bulletin, the last position to be filled was for the Head of English. You will be pleased to hear that we have appointed Ms Elaine Long who is currently a teacher at KGV. Futher details are included below. I am sure that she will be a very welcomed member of our teaching staff and I look forward to working with her next year.

Head of English

Elaine Long, B.A. (Hons), PGCE – British
Elaine completed her university studies at Nottingham and East Anglia Universities in the UK. She has taught in schools in the UK, Shanghai, and Hong Kong, including Dulwich College and KGV. She has extensive experience with both the IBDP and with IGCSE, and was formerly the Deputy Head of English at Dulwich College Shanghai. Elaine is a very creative and passionate educator and is looking very much to working with our students.

Song Touch Rugby Tournament Report by Song Sports Leader George Birkby, 8.2

Without exception, every player who played for Song House in the touch rugby tournament exceeded my expectations, both in team work and commitment. We had some strong teams playing, and it really showed when we dominated on the pitch. A few players that led by example in leading their teams were Sasha, Catherine, Harry Overman, Qino, Kelsie and Caroline. Unfortunately, I did not manage to watch every match we played, but I heard excellent reports! For me the most intense match of the tournament so far has got to be Year 8 Girls Song vs Ming. It truly was a nail biting performance, coming from 3-1 down to a victorious 4-5 effort. Song House should be praised for their sportsmanship and professional attitude. Well done Song!

SEAMC 2012

It is my pleasure to announce that Eva Yam (8.1), Kate Liu (8.2), Ambrose Li (9.2), Richard Yang (9.2), Ashley Kim (10.1) and Janice Hui (10.1) have been selected to particpate in SEAMC 2012, which is being held in Singapore from Thursday 23rd Feburary to Sunday 26th February this year. They will be joining other international schools in the South East Asia region for this exciting event. Thank you for those who participated in the tryout.

Pascal, Cayley and Fermat Mathematics Contests

The Pascal (Y9), Cayley (Y10) and Fermat (Y11) Contests are an opportunity for students to have fun and to develop their mathematical problem solving ability. The contests are written in school and supervised by teachers on Friday 24th February. Please email Mr Lam by Monday 6th Feburary if you would like to take part in any of these contests.

ICT

Year 8 students recently created videos as part of a unit called Remix, where students had to remix content under Creative Commons licenses to make a legal, free piece of media. The video below was made by Emma Lee and Natasha Rode-Christoffersen in 8.2 and is very good example of global citizenship.

Chinese New Year Activities Week

Calligraphy Workshop

Both teachers and students joined in the Calligraphy Workshop, including Mr White. It was Katrina Cranfield and Mrs Kramer’s first time doing Chinese calligraphy, but they did a very good job indeed.

Calligraphy Workshop

Calligraphy Charity Sale

There was also a Calligraphy Work Display and Charity Sale, which displayed and sold work donated from the ICHK Calligraphy Club. Half of the works were sold – a big thank you to all the buyers. Special thanks also goes to all the students from ICHK Calligraphy Club who donated 40 calligraphy works they made especially for this Chinese New Year Charity Sale: Connie Chan, Edison Chan, Yan Cheung, Owen Ching, Daimhlinn Darling, Alex Gibbard, Sky Kanagawa, Emma Lee, Reina Mun, Venessa Poon, Lawanya Rathninde, Temmy Santoso, Coco Tsang, Lios Van Eck, Oscar Woo, and Christine Yeung.

News just in - $523.30 was raised in total (Tang: $117.10, Ming: $146.20, Song: $260.00) That means that 10 points went to Song!

Also, many thanks to the SRC Event Leaders – Lawanya, Jamie and Ashley – who helped with the charity sale.

Calligraphy Charity Sale

Dumpling Workshop

The two-day workshop coordinated by Ms Luk, was a great hit! Charlotte, Femke, Vanessa, Nika, Emily and Ashely Kim, Janice Hui, Stephanie, Relin, Sky, Bop, Noah, Lawanija, Ananya, Natasha, Relin, Jennifer Cheung, Ben Biggs, Janice Leung, Vanessa Poon and Noah Jim donated their precious 1st breaks time to a charity cause and learnt and polished their dumpling wrapping skills. Every single handmade dumpling was sold in the second break, collecting a total of $597.70 which will be donated to charity – the St.James’ Settlement.

Anyone for a dumpling?

Dragon Design Competition

Five contestants presented their designs: Christy Liu, Yan Cheung, Selene Lee, Clare Coey, and a team formed by Paula Statskey, Nika Marlow and Lynden Chiang. After votes were cast using the whole-school online anonymous poll, Selene Lee was announced the winner, receiving a prize from Mr White on Monday’s Chinese New Year Assembly and winning 10 house points for Song!

Selene receiving her prize from Mr White.

Chinese New Year Assembly

Our special Chinese New Year assembly saw some wonderful Chinese themed performances from Year 9-10 students. Daimhlinn Darling and Edison Chan from Y8 also did a superb job as the “Masters of Ceremonies”. We were treated to a unique mini film – The Scrooge of Chinese New Year – made and performed by Year 9 and 10 students. If you haven’t already seen it, please take a look below.

Traditional Chinese-Dress Down Day

Thursday saw students wear traditional Chinese outfits in order to raise more money for the St. James’ Settlement. We are very pleased to announce that $3,001.20 was raised in total. There were many beautiful examples of Chinese clothes worn and below is just a small selection.

From left to right: Relin, Sasha, Katherine, Rosie and Kelly

And finally …. our lucky students were visited by the God of Fortune himself, who handed out red ‘lai si’ packets to everyone, although he did look strangely familiar…
